Introduction

This project is related with the English Subject. Our purpose was to create a blog about a Myth or a Legend. We decided to talk about “The Legend of Blair Witch” and “The Blair Witch Project”, a documentary about that legend.
In this blog you will find information about these two topics, a review about the documentary, several pictures and “The Blair Witch Project” movie trailer.
We hope you´ll enjoy it.

The Legend Of Blair Witch

The Legend of the Blair Witch started in 1785 when an old woman named Elly Kedward immigrated over to USA from Ireland, to a town known as “Blair”.
The villagers found out that she was luring the town´s children into her house so that she could get their blood.
In 1786, the townspeople accused her of being a witch and decided to cast her out into the forest with no water or food in the middle of a strict winter. With this, they thought that the witch was gone forever.
However, by the end of that winter, most of the children of Blair had mysteriously disappeared and the villagers blamed Elly Kedward. After that, the townsfolk proclaimed the village of Blair and the Black Woods as cursed.
The townspeople left Blair and swore to never mention Elly Kedward´s name again.

In 1809 a rare book called The Blair Witch Cult is published. It tells of bloodletting and how the entire town of Blair is cursed by the Witch.
The abandoned township was renamed Burkittsville in 1824 and the town was now free of any curse.
One year later a small girl named Eileen Treacle was pulled down by a ghostly hand into Tappy East Creek. There were eleven witnesses who watched the little girl being dragged under superficial water. Her body was never recovered.
For thirteen days afterwards the river stream was reported of being polluted with an oily substance along with a lot of stick figures.
A farmer reported that the cows that drank that river´s water died or had calves with birth defects.

In March 1886 another girl, Robin Weaver, was reported as missing in the Black Woods. A search party was sent to search the young child. The search party didn´t found Robin. However, Robin appeared and she told that she saw an old lady in the forest. She said that the woman didn´t talked and was floating in the air. That woman took Robin to an old house and left her in the basement. Robin was able to escape and returned safely to the town.
The first search party out looking for Robin disappeared. A second search party was sent out looking for them and they were horrified when they found the first search party disemboweled and placed upon a coffin rock with strange pagan symbols carved into their faces and feet
The second search party returned to town bringing back the sheriff with them. They discover that there was no trace of the dead bodies but the air remained intense with the sense of death. None of the bodies were ever recovered.
In November 1940 local children started to mysteriously disappear. Between the dates of November 1940 and May 1941 a total of seven children were reported as missing.
On 25th May, 1941 an old hermit, Rustin Parr, who was known for living in an old house on a hill in the woods came into the local market exclaiming mysteriously that "I've finally finished". This led the police to hike up to his house in the woods where they discovered seven children's bodies ritualistically disemboweled with pagan symbols carved upon them.
Parr said that there was a ghost of an old woman in the woods that disappeared everytime he ran after her. He said that he had a eerie voice in his head telling him what to do. He could not resist that voice and one day, that voice told him to go to the town and get the first two children he saw.
Parr took eight children, but only killed seven of them. He claimed that the woman appeared after he killed the seventh children and told him to go to the town and say to everybody what he had done. He said that she would leave him alone if he did this. Parr released the last children, Kyle Brodie and he cried when was doing it.
When the police came to his house, they found little Kyle shocked and confused on the front terrace. Kylie was unable to speak. They soon came across the bodies of the children in seven graves in the cellar.
Kyle Brody never recovered from the two months that he spent in Parr's house. It was found that Kyle was forced to stand in the corner whilst a child was killed behind him. He remained unable to socialize for the rest of his life until his death in 1971.
Rustin Parr was convicted and hanged.

Blair Witch Project

In October of 1994, Heather Donahue, Michael Williams and Joshua Leonard, student filmmakers, set out to shoot a documentary about a local legend, the Blair Witch. In the forests near Burkittsville, Maryland, many children have vanished in the 1940s and people still avoid going too deep into the woods. So, the group sets out to look for facts that prove the legend, equipped only with two cameras and a little hiking gear. First, they find little piles of stone that must have been arranged artificially, later, they have to admit to be lost in the woods. Strange sounds at night and more piles of stones in places where they have not been before cause the already desperate group to panic. And one night, when they should be at home days ago, Josh disappears in the woods. Only what has been recorded and filmed with the cameras is found a year later and shows what happened in the woods.

Following Josh's voice, Heather and Mike find an abandoned house in a clearing and they enter the house where they see runic symbols on the wall next to child sized hand prints. Josh's voice seems to be coming from somewhere inside the house and Mike rushes upstairs so that he could rescue Josh. Mike then realizes that the voice is now coming from the basement and rushes down the steps. Suddenly, Mike is standing still and the camera falls. Heather gets out of control when she sees Mike in the corner of the room, face against the wall. Suddenly Heather's camera is knocked down too and she is rendered silent. The film runs for a few seconds and then dies.

Blair Witch Project Review

"The Blair Witch Project is, in a word, brilliant - and is even more impressive considering that it's the debut effort from filmmakers Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick. (Some will argue that something this experimental and unusual would not have come from an established director, and there's ample evidence to back up such a statement.) Watching this film is a harrowing experience because we accept the characters as completely real and become engaged in their ordeal. In one corner of my mind, I knew this was all fictional, but the verisimilitude is impressive, and results in an experience that is as fascinating as it is involving and creepy."

"As an example of a film which was to become a victim of its own hype, "The Blair Witch Project" still stands out as an innovative piece of film-making. The dynamics between the three main characters, veering from intense dislike to petrified reliance on each other, makes compelling if uncomfortable viewing. In addition, the handheld camerawork - on both videotape and film - creates a real in-your-face feel that extends the mounting anxieties experienced by the characters to the audience.
Not as terrifying as advertised, and definitely flawed, it is still one of the most original horror films to have emerged in recent years. While it slightly loses the atmosphere in the last third as the hysteria builds, the first part of the film has some genuine moments of horror which raise hairs on the back of your neck, and if nothing else, will keep you out of the woods."

Conclusion

Before doing this project, we didn´t know much about the Legend of Blair Witch, but after we watched the documentary/movie Blair Witch Project and colected some information in the Internet, we understood the importance of this legend. All of us have gained a litlle bit more with this project: now we know who is Blair Witch and the mysticism that is involved in this legend. We liked to do this project, because it gave us a lot of new information, and it has some creepy parts, specially in some moments in the movie. The legend is very interesting too, with lots of things that nobody can explain and if you´re curious we´re sure you´ll like it. This is one of the reasons why we have choosen this theme: the fact that we learn about something new and very interesting, and it was pleasurable to do it.
